Who was Saint Padre Pio?
Life and History
Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) was an Italian Capuchin friar known for his profound life of prayer, for the gift of the stigmata (the wounds of Christ on his own body) and for countless accounts of graces obtained through his intercession.
Gift of Stigmata
For 50 years, he carried the wounds of Christ on his own body - one of the few saints with this phenomenon documented by science and the Church. These wounds remained open and bleeding, but without becoming infected, something inexplicable to medicine.
Devotion to the Guardian Angel
Since he was a child, he saw and talked to his guardian angel. It was common for him to send his guardian angel to comfort and protect those in need, and to advise his spiritual children to do the same. This special ability profoundly shaped his spirituality.
